As Feter Fiske once said to his audience, PhDs should apply the 80:10:10 rule. Quésako?
This rule states that you should spend 80% of your time working on your professional attributions, 10% helping others, and 10% more discovering the outside world.

I know for a fact that working a PhD requires a lot amount of time performing experiments, analyzing data, monitoring scientific publications, coaching undergraduate students, filling out administrative documents, reporting thesis advancements to the PhD committee, but you should try finding 10% amount of your time to spend it outside.
Doing what? Well, for starters, attending other meetings that you are used to go every week (unrelated field, professional conference, networking events, ...), undertaking short-term professional trainings, learning a new language perhaps?
Why? Because it allows you to meet others people, see how professional world works, enhance your visibility for later when you'll need it.

There is no unique recipe for everyone, maybe we should try compiling these ideas?
Here are a few of them, I'll continue my list later...
